Our first item, The Hungry Stones -- an iconically poetic & romantic ghost story penned by poet-laureate Rabindranath Tagore -- is in ENGLISH. An unsuspecting tax-collector chances upon a rather romantic looking relic of a palace, built hundreds of years ago as a seraglio, and gets quite fascinated with it as he starts to use it as his quarters. After a first few nights, however, he begins to have visions of some of its original inhabitants. We suspect the audience will wait breathlessly to find out how he finally escapes his tryst with this stone giant "frought with peril."
After a short break, we will present our second drama -- "The Critic" -- a comedic satire in its original Bengali (with synopsis, foreword & supertitles in English) penned by a renowned post-Tagore era playwright Manoj Mitra. On Nov 12, 2024 Mitra breathed his last. This is our way of commemorating his legacy.
Synopsis:
A good-for-nothing malcontent who found great pleasure in criticizing others while he was alive, finally kicks the bucket and shows up at the pearly gates of heaven, demanding entry. His sharp tongue and ruthless critiquing of anything and everything, practically all of God's creations, throws Lord Bidhata and his able assistant Chitragupta into a dilemmatic state of befuddlement. How the celestial duo succeed in teaching the malcontent a lesson and barring him entry into heaven is the subject matter of this comedy. We trust you'll enjoy it immensely as line by line English translations of the dialogue will be projected on the backscreen.
